What Are Segments?

Segments let you analyze survey results for specific groups — beyond standard filters like department or location.

In Nectar, Segments are created from Lists that are enabled for analytics. All Segments are Lists, but not all Lists are Segments.

This feature is only for Nectar Engage

What’s the difference between Lists and Segments?

  • Lists are collections of people created in the Lists tab

    • Manual Lists: You add people manually or via CSV

    • Dynamic Lists: People are added automatically based on rules (e.g., department, hire date)

  • When a List is marked "Display this list in analytics", it becomes a Segment

Once enabled, that Segment appears across Nectar analytics for filtering and comparisons.

What do Segments unlock?

Segments let you:

  • Compare engagement across custom-defined groups

  • Analyze groups that don’t fit neatly into standard fields like department or role

  • Reuse the same group definitions across multiple surveys

Common Segment examples:

  • New Hires (Last 6 Months)

  • Customer Success

  • Managers

  • Hired in 2025

Pro Tip: Use Segments for stable, business-relevant groups that you want to track over time.

How do I know if a List is a Segment?

In the Lists tab:

  • Lists that are Segments show a chart icon next to their name

  • Hovering the icon shows: "This list is available as a Segment in analytics"

Note: The icon indicates analytics availability — not performance.

How to Create a Segment

Segments are created by enabling analytics for an existing List.

In the Lists tab, you can create:

Manual Lists

  • Add people manually or upload a CSV

  • Best for fixed or one-time groups

Dynamic Lists

  • Add people using rules (e.g., department, hire date)

  • List updates automatically as data changes

Tip: Use Dynamic Lists for ongoing Segments like "New Hires" or "Managers."

Step 2: Enable the List for analytics

During List setup or while editing:

  • Toggle “Display this list in analytics” ON

    • The List becomes a Segment

    • It appears immediately across all survey analytics

Turning the toggle OFF:

  • Hides the Segment from analytics

  • Does not delete the List itself

No need to resend surveys — changes apply to both past and future data.

Using Segments in Analytics

Segments appear in analytics wherever filters are supported.

Where Segments appear

You’ll see Segments in:

  • Engagement Analytics (Overview, Heatmap, Insights, Responses)

  • eNPS Analytics

  • Custom Survey Analytics

Anywhere there's a filter, Segments will be an option.

Filtering by Segment

To filter results:

  1. Open the Filter menu

  2. Select Segments

  3. Choose one or more Segments to apply

You can filter by multiple Segments at once.

Viewing Segments in the Heatmap

Segments are especially powerful in the Heatmap view:

  1. Set Group By to Segments

  2. Choose which Segments to display

  3. View scores and themes by Segment

Use this to compare engagement across groups like "Managers" or "Hired in 2025."

Anonymity and Size Rules

To protect privacy:

  • Segments with fewer than 5 people won’t appear in filters

  • This check happens automatically at filter time

  • Dynamic Segments are hidden if they fall below the threshold

Tip: If a Segment is missing, check its current size.

Managing Segments & Best Practices

Editing and Maintaining Segments

In the Lists tab, you can:

  • Edit rules (Dynamic Lists)

  • Add/remove people (Manual Lists)

  • Rename Lists or Segments

  • Toggle analytics visibility ON or OFF

All changes apply immediately.

Tip: Renaming a Segment updates it everywhere — safely.

Archiving Segments

To clean up outdated Segments:

  • Archive the List

  • It’s removed from analytics and survey targeting

Segment Privacy

  • Segments with under 5 people are hidden

  • Applies to all analytics views

  • No admin action needed — handled automatically

Tip: Disappearing Segments are usually a size issue.

Best Practices

  • Be intentional: Only create Segments you plan to use regularly

  • Name clearly: Segment names appear in filters

  • Avoid overlap: Too many similar Segments can clutter analytics

  • Be consistent: Reuse the same Segments across surveys to track trends

Pro Tip: Start with a few high-impact Segments, then expand as needed.
