What is an Engagement Survey?

An Engagement Survey is a company-wide survey designed to measure how connected, motivated, and committed employees feel to their work and organization.

It helps you understand not just how engaged your workforce is (the outcome), but also why they feel that way (the drivers) — allowing you to address root causes of disengagement early.

How does the Engagement Survey work?

The standard Engagement Survey includes 33 research-backed questions that explore key areas of the employee experience, from leadership trust to recognition and growth.

Two layers of insight:

  • Engagement Index (Outcome):
A score based on 5 core questions that reflect overall engagement. This gives a high-level view of how employees feel about their work, company, and future.

  • Pillars (Drivers):
These are the underlying themes (e.g., leadership, communication, development) that explain why engagement is high or low. Each Pillar helps pinpoint where to focus improvements.

Example:
Low scores in the Recognition pillar may indicate employees don’t feel valued — a key factor in disengagement.

Because the survey is standardized, you can:

  • Benchmark results across teams or departments

  • Track trends over time

  • Identify where leadership action is most needed

When should I send an Engagement Survey?

We recommend sending it once or twice per year — typically every 6 or 12 months. This cadence balances regular feedback with avoiding survey fatigue.

  • Send it to everyone in the organization, regardless of level or team.

  • Broad participation ensures results reflect the true state of engagement.

Once you're ready, our setup flow will walk you through each step — from customizing questions to scheduling delivery.

How to Send an Engagement Survey

Step 1: Set up your survey

  • Click Surveys > Engagement

  • Then, click Manage Engagement in the top right corner. You’ll customize your survey in two main parts: Questions and Settings.

Customize your survey questions

  • You’ll begin with a pre-built set of 33 recommended questions — all designed to measure engagement and its key drivers.

Options available:

  • Use recommended questions

    • All 33 are enabled by default

    • Toggle off any that don’t apply

  • Add custom questions

    • Add unlimited questions in the following formats:

      • Likert scale (e.g., Strongly Disagree → Strongly Agree)

      • Open text

      • Multiple choice

      • 0–10 slider

⚠️ Note: Custom questions won’t appear in the Engagement Index or standard dashboards, but you’ll still see their results in the Individual Survey Analytics view.

Step 2: Configure your survey settings

Set up how your survey looks, who it goes to, and how it’s delivered.

  • Title & Theme: Align with company branding

  • Survey Duration: Set a close date and time

  • Audience: Default is company-wide, but you can target specific groups

  • Rewards (optional): Add point-based incentives for completion

  • Delivery Method:

    • Sent via email by default

    • Shareable link provided for Slack, Teams, etc.

Step 3: Schedule your survey

Once your setup is complete, choose when to launch your survey.

  • Send immediately: Launch right away after review

  • Schedule for later: Pick a future date/time
(Ideal for aligning with events or avoiding peak periods)

You’ll see a Review Modal with a summary of:

  • Selected questions

  • Recipients

  • Delivery method

  • Schedule

💡 Tip: Avoid launching during holidays, performance reviews, or other high-stress times to ensure better participation.

Final Checklist Before Sending

  • 📣 Notify managers so they can boost participation

  • 👥 Confirm your recipients (ideally everyone)

  • 🔍 Preview your questions

  • 📊 Communicate the survey’s purpose and timing to employees

💡 Tip: A short message from leadership explaining the survey's importance can greatly improve trust and response rates.

Once everything’s ready, click Send Survey — and you're done! 🎉

The survey will go live within minutes. You can then head to the Analytics tab to view:

  • Overall engagement scores

  • Pillar breakdowns

  • Key insights for action
